Universities & Higher Education

The gap between studying music and building a career in the industry has never been more important to bridge. Students need more than technical ability and creative talent; they need the confidence, knowledge and professional networks to build sustainable careers in an industry that is constantly evolving.

For more than a decade, I've worked alongside universities and conservatoires to help students make that transition. My role isn't simply to deliver guest lectures or industry talks. I work with academic teams to ensure that what students are learning reflects the realities of today's music industry, while helping institutions strengthen their connections with employers, artists and the wider creative sector.

Having worked across artist management, education, consultancy and the music industry itself, I understand both the academic environment and the expectations students will face once they graduate. My aim is always to make those two worlds feel much closer together.

Employability

Helping students develop the practical skills, confidence and industry understanding they need beyond graduation is at the centre of my work. Whether that's preparing for freelance careers, understanding professional practice, building networks or identifying opportunities, I encourage students to think beyond their final assessment and towards a sustainable future in music.

Curriculum Design

Music education shouldn't stand still while the industry changes around it. I work with universities to review, develop and refine modules, programmes and artist development initiatives that balance academic rigour with current industry practice. The goal is to create learning experiences that are relevant, engaging and genuinely prepare students for professional careers.

Industry Partnerships

Strong industry relationships create meaningful opportunities for students. Throughout my career I've developed partnerships with record labels, festivals, broadcasters, managers, promoters, publishers, local authorities and cultural organisations, helping universities create experiences that extend far beyond the classroom. These relationships have led to live showcases, mentoring programmes, guest speakers, placements, collaborative projects and direct industry engagement.

Guest Lectures

Every institution has different priorities, which is why no two sessions are the same. I regularly deliver lectures on artist development, career strategy, employability, entrepreneurship, music management, the changing music industry and professional practice. Sessions are built around real experiences, current case studies and open discussion rather than theory alone.

I was aware of you through your management of many exciting upcoming new bands in the past few years. I’ve been extremely impressed by your methods of work, ability to engage at all levels and your unflinching love of music and desire to champion those that you believe in.

Workshops

Workshops provide students with practical tools they can apply immediately. From release planning and live strategy to networking, branding and career planning, sessions are designed to be interactive, honest and rooted in the realities of working in music today. I want students to leave with greater confidence as well as practical next steps.

Current and Previous Partners

I've worked with universities, conservatoires and education providers across the UK, including the Royal Northern College of Music, BIMM University, dBs Institute, WaterBear College of Music, LIPA and Liverpool Hope University. Alongside longer-term academic roles, I regularly collaborate with organisations including BBC Introducing, SXSW, Liverpool Sound City and regional music services to create opportunities that connect education with the wider industry.

The Difference It Makes

For universities, success isn't simply measured by graduate destinations. It's reflected in students who leave with stronger professional networks, clearer career direction and a realistic understanding of how the industry works. My work is designed to help institutions strengthen employability, deepen industry engagement and create experiences that students continue to benefit from long after graduation.

If you're looking to strengthen artist development, refresh your curriculum or build more meaningful links with the music industry, I'd be delighted to discuss how we could work together.
