Why do emerging acts need guidance?
Before an artist spends money on their project, release, or campaign, they need guidance on working out who their audience is, where their audience is, and how best to reach that audience. Artist development requires careful consideration; this doesn’t mean pushing them in a certain direction, but what is does mean is a mixture of coaching and/or mentoring.
What is coaching?
- Would suit more established artists, and we’d aim this at 18–25-year-olds looking to further their careers.
- It's essentially a non-directive form of development.
- It focuses on improving performance and developing an artist.
- Personal factors may be included but the emphasis is on performance of the artistic project.
- It provides people with the opportunity to better assess their strengths as well as their development areas.
- It's a skilled activity, which should be delivered by people who are trained to do so.
- Through artist development coaching we can help a solo artist or group unblock their own path, and then connect them with the right team to help the project progress.
What is mentoring?
- Mentoring in tends to describe a relationship in which a more experienced industry expert shares their greater knowledge to support the development. This is more time-consuming and ongoing.
- It calls on the skills of questioning, listening, clarifying, and reframing that are also associated with coaching.
- One key distinction is that mentoring relationships tend to be longer term than coaching arrangements.
- With mentoring it’s important to provide small steps and goals to the artist, leading to their first gig, studio session, release, or even just developing their social media profile.
